Nottingham City Homes: Part Six: Repairs Guide for New Senior Citizens in Indepedendant Living flats

This article was written with the specific intention of assisting any Senior Citizen/s who may move into a Nottingham City Homes Independent Living Flat accommodation at the Woodthorpe Court flat complex.

When you move into the apartment, one of the things you find most encouraging is the excellent door lock on the outer door.

It will have a smooth action, solid sound when it locks every time with one full turn of the key, and you do not have any problems connected with the mechanism whatsoever. After you have been in situ for a few weeks, the Managment will find out that they do not have a door key to the flat door, to use in the event of you activating

After you have been in situ for a few weeks, the Managment will find out that they do not ha01W07ve a spare door key to the flat door, to use in the event of your activating your alarm (The alarm you  pay extra on your rent to hire, and even increases your Council tax payment) in an emergency. The Nottingham Homes Response team (That’s them who when you activate your alarm, you get an engaged tone), will, you are later advised, need to arrange with the Nottingham City Homes Repairs Team to fit a replacement lock on your outer door.

The complex Coordinator, on returning from her holiday three weeks later visits you and tells you she will arrange for the lock to be replaced with a new one, and you will hear from the NCH repair team with an appointment and date for this to be attended to within a few days.

Three weeks later, you will get your appointment for two weeks later for a Thursday between 0730hrs and 1800hrs. Luckily this will give you time to cancel your appointment at the GUM clinic and Dentists.

Come the Thursday in question, a fresh-faced middle-aged chap appears at your flat with his bag of tools and sets to changing the lock on your door.

This takes him all of five minutes if that. He hands you the keys and is off like a shot. Leaving no mess behind him, I must say!

His early arrival and tackling of the job meant that you could still make the GUM clinics appointment you cancelled and you ring them to see if this is still possible. After 15 minutes and a costly phone call explaining the situation to each of the three people the other people you spoke to before put you through to; A lady said okay, but you must get there within an hour.

Tickled pink at this, you rush around getting your paperwork and records ready and start to depart to catch the bus luckily timed just right for you to get to the clinic in time.

But the new lock will not lock! The key just keeps on turning around and around.

After a long while trying to get it to work, you realise you will not catch the long gone bus, so ring the GUM Clinic, another expensive phone call and embarrassing explanations to each person you spoke to, and are given another appointment for three weeks time.

You go down to the Winwood complex hut, to see a coordinator so you can ask for 02 allegroadvice.

There will be no one in.

So you return home and try again a few hours later.

You try again on the next morning and catch them having their breakfast porridge and honey. She informs you she will get in touch with the Nottingham City Homes Repair Team after taking a look at the lock herself later, asks if you will be in your apartment. You tell her, yes, being as you can’t lock the door it would be imprudent to go out!

0001aA few hours later she arrives and tries the key in the lock. Gets onto her phone straight away to the repair team and informs you they will attend in the morning between 0730 > 1400hrs.

You move some stuff from the unsorted bedroom to block entry to the door opening for the night and settle down, pleased that you had no Whoopsiedangleplops or injuries in moving and stacking the stuff up against the door so as to hear anyone coming in during the night.

P1050981Of course, the Fire Alarm activates later on. Moving the stuff out of the way so you can escape if needed, you cut your wrist and bang your head as you bend down to pick up your self-built barricade stuff.

Unsure of what actions to take, thanks to the tiny wording and bad colour scheme of the Fire Action poster.

You will swear at this point.

In the morning, another chap from the Repair Tea arrives and is not a happy fellow. He does a lot of tutting while inspecting the inside workings of the lock mechanism. The conversation might go:

Him: “You’ve been pulling at the key as you turn it!”

You: “I’ve only tried to use it once since your mate fitted it the other day, and Dean the coordinator can’t get it to work either!”

Him (Slightly red-faced): “Oh, well someone’s been pulling it while turning the key!”

You: “Tommyrot!”

Him: “What?”

You: “I’m sorry, but your know-all attitude when you do not know something but guess is very annoying – [That ‘^(#:@ “!ing key has not been pulled at!]”

At this, he became calmer and more sociable in his nature. He got the thing working by dismantling it and refitting it.

He chuntered away to himself as he left.

In the coming weeks, you will find that the lock when turning, will slowly start needing more and more turns before it locks, it will become clunky and occasionally stick too – but you will be too scared to report the matter again!

Not a good morning at all folks. Woke drowsily at around 0500hrs, felt the tingling and wet in the lower region along with the urge to pass water. Stood up to go to the bathroom and nearly went over when a dizzy spell hit me and Arthur Itis let me know ‘He’s Back!”

‘Little Inchy’ was in a right state, bloodied and still pouring it out! I really was close to pressing my wrist alarm button – but glad I didn’t because, within a few minutes, I managed to cease the flow painfully. (Or so I thought at the time)

Onto the throne and as I evacuated the stomach started grinding and bubbling away, and another dizzy hit me. I thought ‘Ah well, get em out of the road early,’ Huh!

Then Anne Gyna joined in the other ailment. If Inchy goes on like this, I’ll run out of clean undies and jammy bottoms. And I managed to bang me head when I bent down to get the bleach out to clean the blood up in the bathroom. Hehe!

The eyelids felt heavy. I got the kettle on and made a cuppa and took the medications. The guts were still heaving a bit, I thought of what the plans were for the day, maybe better not to go out? I might try a little walk into Sherwood if Little Inchy doesn’t start again now I’ve applied the Daktacort cream and cleaned him. My mind is taking its own route this morning, I’m just tagging along. The oddest feeling that I’m looking at myself doing things rather than controlling myself. Typing this, I’m making more errors and having to amend more than I have ever done?

I’ll have another cup of tea and see how it goes when I try on Facebook. At one stage I thought I was going bonkers, then realised I already was bonkers, Hehe!

I’ll see if Arthur Itis will let me get into the bath later, where I can sort Inchy out and have a good soak, hot water permitting. If I recall correctly, it as last Saturday when the hot water wasn’t hot? Hello, off to the porcelain again, oh I hope things are okay. Back in a bit folks (I hope).

P1050985I’m back! And considerably perked up I might add! Why you ask? (Or maybe not like) I’ll tell you; No bleeding from Hem Aroid and only the tiniest bit from Little Inchy, no dizzies now and, it is drizzling rain outside with a hint of mist. Maybe it is because of the improved conditions healthwise, but I saw such beauty in this photo I took from the kitchen window.

Did some Facebooking.

Feeling a bit better now, so I’ll get a bath and do me ablutions then consider going to the Arboretum to see the mallards and if the pond had been refilled yet. Got the seeds and mealworms ready in the bag first. Then on the way back I can drop off BJ’s photographs?

Then on the way back I can drop-off BJ’s photos at his abode? We’ll see.

P1050986Getting into and out of the bath was easier than usual. Feeling a bit better, when I set off to catch the L9 bus into town. I got down and realised it was a Saturday and there is no 0930hrs L9 bus running, so I caught the L8 into Sherwood, then a bus to the city.

Glad I did, cause it allowed me to have a nice chinwag with some folk in the bus.

At the bus stop in Sherwood, the queue grew and grew as we waited patiently for a bus to arrive. When it did, it was a single decker and already all the seats had been taken. I was surprised the drive kept letting people cram into the vehicle, I stood in the disabled bay and when it came to my wanting to get off, P1050987 P1050988it was a struggle getting through all the folks standing in the centre aisle, but I bravely persisted and got off on Mansfield Road at the stop for the Nottingham Arboretum.

Crossed the road and in through the gates and through down to The Muggers Bridge. The rain was pelting down now, as I got under the bridge I thought I’d take a photo or two of the underside, but got rather wet from the rain water dripping through the brickwork, I was lucky I didn’t get the camera wet.

P1050989As I walked down through the park towards the Duck Pond, I espied a courting couple of mallards on the grass. I struggled to get the umbrella up and tried to take a decent photo from underneath of it.

I pressed on down to the pond area. The Aviaries were all empty today but, there was water back in the pond, although mysteriously no pigeons P1050990about, and very few mallards too?

The rain eased to just a few gentle drops and as I got the meal worms to throw to them, Isaw that some clot had thrown a massive amount of sliced bread into the pond and Bankside. Probably a takeaway merchant, judging by the amount of what was obviously full slices loafs of bread all over the place. They will have done this to save on costs and bother of using the dustbins the Council provides.

This is not going to do the ducks any good at all, all this bread will stodge the poor things and as it decays will poison the water. I left the Arboretum feeling a bit sad and angry.

The rain stopped as I was walking into town. I called at Tesco in the Victoria Centre (Mall).

I got some bits and had a window shop session as I left.

P1050992I took a hobble through Trinity Square feeling a bit better again then. Took some photographs to post on the TFZ site later.

Caught a naughty driver dropping off his daughter/wife/relative/bit on the side, in the Buses taxis and emergency services only lane. I also noted the rain puddle, waiting for the next bus to splatter the pedestrians as it wades through it. Still, it pleases the drivers, I’ve often noticed the drivers grinning widely through gritted teeth as they do this, bless em. Hehe!

P1050994Walked on to the bus stop, no L9’s available, so I caught the 40 bus. That was busy too today. I wondered if something had been taking place that I didn’t know about with so many passengers getting on.

I wondered if something had been taking place that I didn’t know about with so many passengers getting on.

Not that my not knowing about something is rare, of course.

P1050995The rain turned heavy again as we moved off from the bus stop.

By the time, it came to my alighting bus stop, I felt I knew the two ladies sat behind me. I picked up much information by simply listening to them chinwagging, one in particular who had a voice level and pitch of a champion town crier: Her daughter had been done for drug distribution, she is having her Benefits cut to £240 a week, but they were still going to pay her rent for her, she was not happy with that at all? She’d bought a new washing machine, she had to top up her ‘Lecy Card’, and the hairdresser on her estate is no good, etc. Hehe! There was lots more that I enjoyed listening to so much, I nearly missed my bus stop!

I got off the bus and waited for a gap in the traffic, getting wetter and wetter in the rain so I could get across the road. I squelched along back to the flat, the water entering my right shoe reminded me I needed a new pair.

Having had no dizzies during my sojourn, it came as no surprise when I got a good one in the lift up to the flat. Frit me a bit that one. When I got in the apartment, I WC’d and put the alarm wristlet on, made a cuppa, took the medications and put me bits away.

P1050996Got the fodder going.

Tin of stewed beef, petit pois, oven chips and made a bit of extra gravy so I could soak it up with a couple of slices of the Irish Batch bread, and a dessert tub to follow.

Not bad at all. Rated it at a decent 8.9/10.

Doing the washing up after, another dizzy hit me. I must tell the Nurse at the INR test on Monday no, Tuesday this week.

Fatigue overcame me, not unusual that nowadays. Felt drained. Didn’t do anything much then, TV, nodded off, thought about doing something useful, nodded off, TV, thought about doing something… Tsk! Hehe!

Friday 1st /April 2006

Woke late for me, around 0500hrs – still feeling tired? Recalled bits of the dreams but nothing concrete, just that they were not nice.

Tried to remember things I wanted to do for today, last night; take my number for Norman to use, visit BJ see him or post his photographs through his letter box, get the laundry done and one other thing; but what was it?

Visited the WC, made a cup of tea, took the medications, and still couldn’t recall the other thing. Tsk!

Not in good spirits this morning for some reason? I seemed to have more questions than answers milling about my mind.

Finished the post for yesterday then started this one off.

Got the laundry prepared and in the bag ready.

Had a wash and brush-up, got the change for the laundry room machines and poddled down with some nibbles in my pocket in case I saw anyone.

Got the one washing available machine going, and sat to do the crosswords in the foyer. Some residents came through and out to catch the bus, had a quick gossip with some of them.

Lily came down to sit and wait for her visitor. She asked if I’d got any food for her. (Bless her) I gave her some from my pocket. Being as I was going to have to go up to the toilet anyway, I told her I’d bring her an easter egg down.

She then told me her daughter and son in law visited her yesterday and now she can’t find £120 she had hidden in her wardrobe? Poor Lily, she does get confused with things, but she told me they had stolen from her in the past.

I said if I saw Deana the flats coordinator I’d let her know. Went up and toileted and back down with the Easter Egg for Lily. Met three ladies in the lift, and handed out the last three Kinder bars for them to have among themselves.

P1050977Gave Lily her Easter Egg and checked on the washing machine progress. Odd machine this one, the time left was at 20 min when I put it in, then it went up to 40 min, now it was showing 55 mins?

Back up to the WC again. Back down, Gerri the contact lady was in the lobby. I got the very wet clothes out of washing machine and into the dryer.

P1050979Told Gerri about the draughts still in the kitchen and she said she’d report it again.

When the dryer had completed its cycle – the clothes were still almost wet, let alone damp! Gerri had a look. Put it back on again, more time lost and expense. Did some crosswords, with the help of Gerri and some residents as they came and went.

After the second cycle on the dryer, the clothes seemed okay. Took them up and into the airing cupboard to make sure. Over three hours the laundry took me, Humph!

No time to get to BJ’s house, so I’ll take them (The photos) in the morning.

P1050982Updated this and got some fodder on. Decided on petit-pois, boiled potatoes and crispy battered chicken lumps.

Very nice, rated this one at a decent 8.9/10. Feeling drained a bit now?

Feeling drained a bit now?Went to the bathroom and oh dear;

Took the medications and fell asleep for a bit. Waking up with wetness and a painful tingling sensation from Little Inchy. This reminded me that I’d forgotten to ring the clinic about my missed appointment on Monday. Went to the bathroom to investigate and oh dear; Blood all over the underpants and legs. Hell of a job getting it to stop. Not good, but partly my own fault for missing the session at the clinic.

Felt a bit depressed then, and tried to read my book, but no concentration available.

Got the TV on but spent more time falling asleep and missing stuff, then the wet sensation again from the below, once more to the bathroom, this time, the haemorrhoids joined in with the bleeding, made a right mess of the WC bowl.

Got my head down but struggled to get to sleep. I put the TV back on, and that did it, I was off. But only for an hour or so. Tried reading some of the Sniper autobiography eventually getting off again around 0130hrs, waking up at 0500hrs.  Drained, Tsk!

Inchcock Today – Thu 31 Mar 16: Winwood Community Shed Social Hour today

* * * * * * * * * *

Thursday 31 March 2016

Stirred into life around 0415hrs. Stomach rumbling, I made my way to the porcelain unhindered by Arthur Itis, and what a painful and bloody struggle it was thanks to the Haemorrhoids and constipation. Sore bum now, Hehe!

While straining to carry out my actions, I recalled just a bit of one of the dreams I’d had. I was chipping away with a screwdriver at some mortar between bricks, and each time I removed a block it was replaced by a couple of navvies from the other side of the wall, who swore at me, cursing me? That’s all I remember about it.

I made a cuppa and took the medications, along with a Senna pod tablet.

Laptop on to finish the last diary off then started this one.

Had a dizzy when I washed the cup to make another brew, a nasty one. Only lasted for seconds, though. The INR blood level that’s gone down suddenly to 2.2 might have something to do with it, or is it the other way around when it’s low? Low means the blood is thicker, higher lower… I think.

BJ might be coming to the Winwood Tenants Social hour this morning.

That reminds me, I mustn’t get carried away with blogging and be late for the session. It’s only an hour a week and I want to use it to get to know some of the other residents better. Must give me time to do my ablutions and have a good soak in the bath.

Hello, is the light flickering? No, it’s more flipping flies around the lightbulb again. Used up the last of the fly spray and one is still lurking. I wish I were fit enough to do like we did years ago; Roll up a newspaper and chase the little devils squatting away as jumped up and over furniture determined to get the buggers! Mind you, cleaning up the poor flattened things and ruining the wallpaper… remember anyone?

Although the knees are super stiff this morning, the pain when I move is far less than usual? Ah, maybe it’s the dentist’s painkiller still in my system?

If nothing else, I’m a real thinker still, problems and queries don’t get changed improved or even tackled, but I’m a competent thinker; just an inept doer! That could be amended to go on my gravestone, cause it’s true enough. Hehe!

Did some Facebooking then I checked the emails.

Time for the ablutions and bath.

Got the things ready for the meeting, photographs, gifts, and set off.

No dizzy spells now.

P1050963Arrived at the Winwood Community Hut and BJ came shortly afterwards.

He was not in a good mood and seemed withdrawn compared to his usual self. But he made an effort with the others to chinwag away bless him.

I couldn’t find out what the P1050968problem was.

It was a particularly noisy session this morning, despite being fewer folks than usual in attendance.

I handed out the nibbles and had a session walking around taking sneaky photographs of the residents. David Baily? Phwert!

P1050970Some of the tenants seemed a little down as well as BJ, and I think there was less laughter than there normally is at the meeting.

Then I realised this might not be so as I recognised I was a little down too?

I handed out the photographs from the last sessions and they went down P1050973well.

Poor Toni or Terri had still not found her lost purse and had to go to Broad Marsh to arrange a replacement. I asked her if I could go with her my knowing where to go and who to see at Broad Marsh from when I lost my bus pass. She declined the offer.

Ah-well.

BJ offered to run me to Arnold so I could get the photos printed on their machine and get some bits in.

Poor BJ was not very talkative en route, I was a bit worried about him having problems of some sort, but he was tight-lipped. I’ll phone him tomorrow to see how he is, see if I can help in any way.

He dropped me off near the store doors, I thanked him and he was off.

P1050975I went to the photographic developing machines and set about making myself look a fool trying to find out how to work the USB download and the camera card one.

The lady who helped me last time came to me again and whipped them through for me. I have now got some printed off of the Winwood Social Hour meeting and of BJ from the visit to Papplewick that he’s selected that he wanted. All of them, about 16 photographs or so, for less than £6! Good value that I thought.

Got the receipt and did some shopping, rather treated me, again. Desserts, potato sticks and a selection of Irish batch bread to put in the freezer.

Just timed it nicely, getting to the bus stop with 4 minutes being the time on the board for the arrival of the L9 bus. It arrived 9 minutes later, delayed at the roadworks and temporary traffic lights the driver said.

As the bus passed Sainsburys, Norman, the 92-year-old from the same floor at the flats got on. When we got off at the flats we had a grand gossip, Norman had had the runs so hadn’t been out for three days. I’m going to find the number for my mobile and write it down tomorrow and hand it to him so he can call me at any time for assistance. Keeping tablets in stock as I do, I could have given him some. So glad he’s got rid of diarrhoea now.

In the flat and got the nosh prepared first… well, after visiting the porcelain of course.

I was feeling cheered that Norman was better but worried about BJ’s irritable mood. So couldn’t concentrate on doing this diary, scribbled some notes and left it until the morning.

P1050976The nosh was decent enough.

The batch bread was really excellent, even extra tasty, too much salt in it I expect.

 Rated this one at 8.9/10.

I sorted the nosh into the storage compartments and got the photographs stored safely away for handing out next meeting. Ah, there’s a thought, I could have a walk to BJ’s in the morning and post his photographs through his door, and if he’s in, find out how he is.

A feeling of fatigue overcame me, felt I had no ability to do anything physical for some reason. Wearied, exhausted? No dizzies, though.

Cup of tea and took the medications. I watched some Dr Who episodes, but it was a farcical effort, kept nodding off so often.
